Adventure #218: The Comic Where Brett Voices His Unpopular Opinion On A Very Popular Movie
on March 5, 2009 at 6:07 amOkay, so I enjoyed the Watchmen, but on a whole, I didn’t like it. The first act was amazing, I thought, Rorshach, Night Owl and Dr. Manhattan were pitch-perfect, the Silk Spectre though… who’d she screw to get the part? That was some god awful acting for a role that needed a little more subtlety.
My biggest complaint isn’t even the change to the ending, which I felt fit perfectly, and could have been pretty much interchangable with the book. What I thought really took me out of the movie was the soundtrack, yes, the ham-fisted over-the-top soundtrack, that, while thematically fit, did not fit the emotion of the movie at all. Okay, you play some nice complacent music ironically while the Comedian gets his ass kicked, but that should be the end of it. Argh.
To me, I felt Zach Snyder was trying way to hard to situate on the blood, gore and sex, and not enough on the character development (no, the 5 minute long sex scene doesn’t count as development). Though, all in all, I have to say, the first half of the movie, definetely top notch work, but, the second half just somehow goes into a completely different area and loses me.
But my true fear is how many people are going to vehemently defend the movie when I tell them that I wasn’t all that into it. Because I know several people at SEQALAB are going to be pretty crazy! More on that tommorrow, after I experience it.

Yeah, looks awful to me. Why don’t we make a saturday morning animated series out of Maus, while we’re at it?
Dude, I think this movie fucking SUCKED and I LOVE the comic. So I’m with you in having an unpopular opinion. But you have to remember, most of the mainstream public and movie goers are fucking stupid. These are the people who loved 300 afterall.
SEQALAB should be fun. I’ll be yelling a lot I am sure.
I loved the movie.
I had never read the comic and I thought it was just a bad movie. The general public just creams itself for Zack Snyder films–I have no idea why.
Yeah, I’m still feeling pretty impartial to it, too…The goriness and sex kinda pulled me out of the story (and Ms. Jupiter the elder totally not looking/acting like a woman in her sixties…). I was really into it at first, and by the end, I just wanted to crawl under the seat and hide. A ton of seqa majors were in the theater and all foaming at the mouth about how awesome it was. I’m glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t that into it…
I enjoyed it
I really dont know how to feel about this movie. I want to go watch it, because I’m the kind of guy who gets into all the hype, and because honestly it looks cool from what little I actually have seen, but I’m a bunch of mixed reviews and really do not know if it’s even good.
Will not reading the comic first help? Or will it make it better? I still havent done that. yet.
I agree entirely with you.
Hrmm…you got a point there about the blood & sex…it was VERY over the top. Entertaining none the less but I for one, did enjoy the soundtrack. I thought i complimented the time well. I adored Rorshach’s actor though, MAN was he good!
